As we were celebrating the Coronation in May, we deferred our Annual Meeting to June. Members received reports from the President, Treasurer and the Committee on the previous 12 months. The Committee Report took the form of a powerpoint presentation of our activities; it was fun to look back at all the many different things we got up too.
As is usual at the Annual Meeting, the Committee stood down so a new Committee could be elected. Unsurprising all previous Committee members were re-elected and Jenny was voted our President for another year; we have encouraged members to come and visit our meetings in the hopes more may be encouraged to join. As in previous years, Eckington WI did their own version of Walk the World with a walk down to our local lock at Strensham. A gentle stroll down with refreshments at the lock - much to the surprise of one set of narrowboat holiday makers! They were impressed to find a random bunch of women in the middle of nowhere (or so they thought) sitting down to tea and biscuits ...
A sunny weekend saw the village thronging with visitors. As well as exploring gardens, visitors were able to see the glorious displays in the Church. As well as our own display, several members were also involved in other displays.
Every month we hold a coffee morning in the village. We are very lucky to have 2 active pubs and we support them by alternating our coffee mornings between the 2. They always look after us well and this month was no exception; a warm welcome from the team at The Bell and some lovely cake to go with our drinks (most of the cake had been eaten by the time I took the photo though!)....
To celebrate the upcoming Coronation of King Charles III, we indulged in a meeting of food, fun and festivity. Jacket pototoes were served with Coronation Chicken and Coronation Chick Pea followed by tea and cake. Members had the opportunity to sit and chat, vote on the Craft Competition and take part in a Coronation Quiz. The winner of the Competition was Lindsay with her family of Coronation Chickens (hand sewn - not food!). The hall was decorated with bunting, tables with red, white and blue cloths and colourful posies and members joined in the spirit with red, white and blue clothing! What a bloomin' marvellous April meeting! Aaron Pleciak from Mill Lane Nurseries provided a colourful and inspiring talk on how to get the best from your plants when planted in pots, tubs and baskets. With a variety of locally grown plants on show, it was certainly a bright way to welcome in Spring.
March was a month of varied weather so we were lucky that we held our Tewkesbury walk on a dry Monday. Several members enjoyed a walk along the River Avon at the back of Tewkesbury town, admiring the old buildings and architecture, and learning about the history of Tewkesbury from the information boards along the way. Having reached the end of the walk, we made an unscheduled visit to the Abbey to see the beautiful stained glass windows and finally finished at The Rosada Lunch for a well deserved lunch; just in time missing the rain!
Our March Meeting was an energetic romp through the night sky with Hugh Farey. Accompanied by his slides, Hugh gave an entertaining talk on how the constellations were named, how science has helped us understand the universe and much more. A great talk!
For our extra activity this month, we decided to lunch. Keeping close to home, we chose The Bell and several members joined in for a light lunch and an enjoyable chat.
Our monthly coffee mornings are alternated between our 2 local village pubs, The Bell and The Anchor. The coffee mornings are a chance for members to socialise a little more as well as being an opportunity for prospective new members to join us in an informal setting. This month was the turn of The Anchor and what a welcome we had - tables nicely laid out with a great assortment of cakes. Thanks Jack!
