8 of us attended the Worcs Federation Annual Council Meeting at the Three Counties Showground. Whilst primarily a business meeting to report on the past year, there were a number of stalls with crafts and delicacies from the Country Market on sale. Also on display were entries into the various competitions organised by the WFWI; these included art displays, photography, sugar craft, floral displays and traditional crafts showcasing the immense talents of members throughout the county.
(LADIES - we must really try and enter something next year!!) This year the ACM welcomed 2 speakers to the meeting. The morning ended with a talk and presentation by Chelsea Pensioner, Brian Cummings. He gave a very entertaining talk about how he became a Chelsea Pensioner, what it means to be a Chelsea Pensioner as well as the history of the establishment. He was a popular speaker and has given many WIs ideas about visiting the Chelsea Hospital. The afternoon speaker was Ingrid Seward; she is the editor in chief of The Majesty magazine and the author of a number of books about the Royal Family. Her talk was accompanied by a number of photographs of the Royal Family as she discussed how her latest book, The Queens Speech had come about. Our meeting in October was ‘Behind the Scenes of St Richards Hospice’ with Tricia Cavell. This was an interesting talk which talked about the history of St Richards Hospice, how it first began and how it has developed over the years. There was something unique about this talk as it was not just Tricia providing the talk but a number of the volunteers and others too. This was part of a living history project with people who had been involved with St Richards Hospice, either working, volunteering or receiving their services, giving an oral account of their experiences which has been recorded and it was these recordings that formed part of the talk. A different type of meeting for us but enjoyable none the less. After the talk, business proceeded as normal with reports being given of our experiences at the Archery & Rifle Shooting Day and at the Murder Mystery evening (the 2 are not connected!). Members were reminded about our usual coffee morning and lunch outing, with advance notice of our Christmas Lunch being given.
