Several of our members recently joined the County Trip to Winchester. This is what one of our members had to say: “ Eckington W I only had to travel to Pershore to our luxury coach that was to take us to the wonderful city of Winchester in Hampshire. We were welcomed by our friendly driver Graham who informed us that we were going to ‘Winchester Christmas Market’….what a bonus. After a brief comfort stop on route, we arrived around midday to enjoy and explore this small city.
The landmark of Winchester is the Medieval Cathedral with its roots in the 7th Century and Winchester Cathedral foundations were laid in 1079 and has been a place of worship ever since and is one of the largest Cathedrals in Europe. Visitors are made most welcome to the Cathedral and you can either walk round by yourself or take advantage of one of the many guides. There isthe newly opened Kings and Scribes exhibition spread over three floors, which has been a seven-year project and well worth a visit. In the grounds of the Cathedral, there were some attractive Christmas Market wooden chalets selling a variety of gifts and of course the traditional mulled wine stall. There is a small museum (free entry) just off the High Street, with a wonderful scale model of Winchester. Winchester has many independent shops as well as old favourites like Debenhams and Marks and Spencers. Down the middle of the pedestrian High Street there were many covered market stalls selling fresh produce, gifts, antiques and fashion. There is not a shortage of places to have a coffee of somewhere to eat lunch. Once back on our coach with many full shopping bags we saw Winchester lit up with all the lovely Christmas lights as we said goodbye to a very enjoyable day.” Comments are closed.
